The Caribbean: Background & Influences.
Papaya is a tall herbaceous plant in the genus Carica; its edible fruit is also called papaya. It is native to the tropical region of America, mainly from southern Mexico to Central America. Now these plants are grown in all. Our plantation is in the Caribbean, surrounded by lush, natural beauty, swept by the balmy trade winds of the islands. It’s where this type of papaya, “strawberry papaya” originated. It’s the place we call home. Papaya Villa is set high in the hills above Long Bay at the western end of Tortola, British Virgin Islands.
The papaya mealybug, Paracoccus marginatus Williams and Granara de Willink, is a small hemipteran that attacks several genera of host plants, including economically important tropical fruits and ornamentals.
